After stumbling across some old pictures a few weeks back, I thought I'd take a break from the usual schedule of looking at what I am doing, and look back at what "brought me here", so to speak.
I was introduced to the hobby at a friend's house in 1999, when the Armageddon campaign was about to kick off (which is the sole reason I remember when I started). Between he and his brother, they had IG, Tyranids, Chaos, and a couple of Space Marines, of which they gave me a tactical marine.
By the end of that year, I had a 2000pt army of Black Templars under the list in Codex: Armageddon, with both a Land Raider and a Crusader, among other things. I had started off with Ultramarines (as you do) but the release of the Crusader, the limited edition Emperor's Champion model, and their knightly feel got me hooked and so I resprayed my blue marines black and fleshed them out a bit.
I sold this army a couple of years back after having left it packed away for a long time. Of course, you never know how much you'll miss something until it's gone, and soon I wanted to play BT again. Now I have 1000pts worth of troops once more, primed a few months ago but I never got round to finishing them. They're probably next after my IG, and I want to build them to be fairly similar to my old army.
Anyway, to finish off this trip down memory lane, here are the pictures I took for my ebay auction. I've come a long way in 10 years.

How about you guys? Are you on your first armies right now? Or for the more experienced hobbyists, are your first minis still tucked away in a box somewhere, or passed down to another? I'd love to hear about them.

I started shortly after 2nd edition was released. My first army was Ultramarines like many are. Long story short, I ended up trading them for a bunch of NIB Eldar, built that army up, but then ended up selling those on eBay once 3rd edition came out.
I had the 1st Edn book and a box of RTB01, still have a squad of them. I'll have to dig them out and post them. Other than that 2nd Edn was a kick start for building, I had a squat army (sold), ork army (lost) and some marines (dumped during house move). Hopefully i'll look after my painted Relictors a bit better!
I have been playing since the release of the Marines & Dark Eldar box set. I have had... BT, A Red Marine Army, A Desert Marine Army, 2 Nid Armies, A 2k Eldar Army, A 3k plus Tau Army, A 3k plus Guard Army, An Old Ork Army, My curret 3k + Ork Army, My current Nid Army for my son 1500, My current Ultramarine Army for my guests 1k or so, and Have plans to work on some Blood Ravens thanks to DoW II. Yep... At times I hate the ease at which ebay allows me to part with armies that currenly take up space...
Crimson Fists are my "third" army, though I didn't really get far on my Dark Angels (only 1k points barely painted) to call it an army.
Tau were my first and I still ahve them. I also have ~70 or so old RTB01 marines that I keep meaning to ebay or turn into a preheresy force. But who's got time for that with Imperial Guard coming out?
I don't plan on ebaying my armies atm. I love my Tau and the nice thing about them is that I can invite friends over who don't have armies and get them hooked! :)
Thanks for the relies everyone, it's great to get a little insight to where we've all been. I kinda feel like the youngster here, what with starting during 3rd ed. ;)
@ Siph: Indeed, it would be a shame for something to happen to such a great looking army. Take good care of 'em. :)
@ Cawshis Clay: It's folk like you that got me into this in the first place, friends inviting me over and giving me a small taste of it. Keep it up! :D
I'll have to look around and dig out some antiques! I've been collecting and painting GW minis since around 1988 or so. Many have been lost to sales and trading over the years, but I still have some super oldies about. Perhaps I'll blog them out?
I've decided to blog my own trip down memory lane. You are credited (and linked to) with the inspiration. Thanks again for the inspiration.
*scratches head* ... hmmmm. I think my oldest Games Workshop miniature is a WFB goblin from the Rogue Trader era. I remember using them in AD&D games when GW sold more than just 40k, WFB & LotR :-)
I'm feeling old now.
